With the 2015 Hurricane season officially starting this week, it made me take a closer look at what every homeowner should know when it comes to their coverage, in the event another hurricane happens.
We all know we need homeowner coverage, but do you know what needs to be covered? It is important to take a good look at your home and make sure everything is covered in the event of a hurricane, not just the physical home.
The Four Types of Coverage Needed In The Event of a Hurricane
1. The Dwelling
This is the actual structure of the house. The bricks and mortar, pipes and shingles of the home. Every homeowners policy will cover this structure to some degree, except in the event of a flood. Even if the flooding is caused by a hurricane, you are still not covered for flood damage. This requires a separate policy.
2. Other Structures
These are physical structures that are not connected to the house, or are only connected by a fence. Examples of this would be a tool shed or a detached garage.
3. Personal Property
Personal property includes all of the contents of your home, such as appliances, furniture, clothing, etc. All of your belongings are NOT insured under this portion of your policy. Exclusions to this definition of ‘personal property’ include jewelry, money and often firearms. These require separate types of policies to be covered.
4. Loss of Use
If a hurricane occurs and you are forced to leave your dwelling because it has become inhabitable, you will need coverage for the additional living expenses. Loss of Use reimburses you for the cost for maintaining a normal standard of living.
It’s important that you understand what is and what isn’t covered in your policy. Make sure your insurance agent knows the nature and layout of your home. If you have other structures, make sure they are included in your policy, make sure your coverage of your personal property is sufficient and make sure to include loss of use.
