We all want 2017 to begin with a happy and healthy bang. However, New Years Eve provides ample opportunity for things to go awry. Keep yourself and those around you having your happiest holidays yet by keeping safety in mind.
Traveling for the Holidays
Many of us will spend some time traveling this time of year, whether across state lines or just to a party across town, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.
- Do not drink and drive.
- Have a plan for how you and those you’re with will get from place to place. Designate a sober driver or have Uber and taxis planned ahead of time. This is not just for your safety, but for the protection of all the bystanders you encounter. Don’t allow a lack of planning to bring tragedy for you or anyone else.
- Be cautious of others on the road. Even if you are not drinking, there is danger in the actions and choices of other drivers on the road.
- Be clear of distractions while you’re driving. Put down your phone and focus on the road.
Celebratory Fireworks
These colorful explosive devices require caution for obvious reasons. Your safest bet is to attend a firework show being put on by professionals. However, if that’s not the plan for this year, then here’s some tips to use fireworks with caution.
- Do not wear any loose clothing if you’re handling fireworks.
- Always have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher on hand in the event of an accident.
- Never light fireworks near dry grass or trees, as this is a fire hazard.
- Always light fire works at a safe distance from people and buildings, pointed directly away from homes and people.
- If a firework doesn’t go off as expected, do not go and examine it or attempt to re-light it. Extinguish it with water.
- Have fire-free alternatives for small children, such as glow sticks or confetti pops.
Being Others-Focused
It’s possible that no everyone around you is being as smart or safe as you are. Take care of yourself and the ones you love by watching out for the people around you. Help others make wise decisions and be willing to step in to keep them safe if necessary. Begin your New Year knowing that the people you love are indeed happy and healthy.
